Murray Hill via Jane Hoffbrau

I am always open to a new hike and when someone told me about the Jane Hoffbrau Oasis I figured this was a perfect time to have a look.  It was about 2.5 km in to the oasis and the elevation gain was 157 meters (515 ft.).  The next part of the hike took us up to Murray Hill and some spectacular views.

Looking down into the oasis from the trail junction.

We tried to hike up through the oasis wash but commonsense overtook our youthful enthusiasm.

As with palm trees in an oasis they are very prone to fire.

Views from halfway up the hill

From this angle it looks like we hiked to the same height of the mountains behind.

There was a cool breeze but we sat out at the far table and enjoyed the view before heading back down.

This view of San Jacinto Mountains as well as the easy route along the ridge to the top of Murray Hill.

This is the vertical profile of the hike.  From the start on the left side to the right you might see that we didn't go back the way we came as the return profile has a higher profile.

The total distance of this hike was 7 miles and a vertical gain of 1880 feet.

  1. I am correcting and expanding some of your narrative on getting through the Goat Trails to Clara Burgess Trail. I'm editing your text as follows:

Beyond the trailhead gate, walk up the road toward twin water tanks. Pass the drive on the right near the top of the hill that leads to the tanks.

Just past this drive, take a single-track trail that rises sharply up hill. Continue on it, and take a right at a Y.

This leads to a double-track trail, on which you turn right to follow around a bend and go downhill.

At the bottom of the hill, take a single-track (Lonely Heart Trail) to the right that leads to another double-track.

Go right for 0.1 mi (180 m) on the double-track, and take the second single-track downhill (Clara's Way) on the left into Eagle Canyon.

Follow Clara's Way 0.4 mi (600 m) into Eagle Canyon. Near the canyon wash, you can turn left to reach Jane's Hoffbrau Oasis, a palm oasis that is a perfect destination for a picnic. However, to reach Murray Hill, turn right to descend to the wash.

Turn left and follow the wash 45 y (40 m) to take a trail to the right out of the wash.

Take this trail along the spine of a ridge until you reach a sign for the Clara Burgess Trail. This is where you will begin your ascent of Murray Hill.
